This remix pack is a special one, not only does it contain remixes by the Classic Brothers, it also holds a couple of remixes that were done for the Classic Brothers. Seymour Bits' This Is The Place was taken to the cleaners and got a thorough overhaul. Than he returned the favor with the title track to Classic Brothers album Off. Then the Brothers took on the Intro from Rimer London's album and destroyed it completely. Rimer went about his remix duties a bit more subtle and reworked Munchies to a slightly more living room friendly track. Finally, but definitely not least is the Machinegewehr remix of FYLB. Maybe one of the more accessible tracks on the album get's even more dance floor friendly. Banger!

Happy New Year. We’re excited to be kicking things off this year with a great new band from our own backyard; The Denzels. We caught up with them this year at CMJ at their showcase at Pianos, were knocked out and hope you will be too.

Still a young group, they’ve been called “a melting pot of all of New York Cities most successful acts.” Their influences range from Brian Wilson and The Cribs, to The Antlers and The Cure. Most of all, they’re influenced by the bands they see each week all over the city. There is a new Brooklyn sound and it’s changing every night. Originally named The Goods, the band began playing around Brooklyn and quickly became known for their energetic live shows. In early 2011 the group changed their name to The Denzels and released the “Slow Death” EP. The songs are a mixture of their surroundings and their upbringing, combining New York style Indie Rock with West Coast beach pop. (The Denzels is: Matt Degorio - Tommy Hinga - Paul Lizarraga - Dave Beegun)

They are releasing their second EP as a free download and are having a release party next week, Wednesday January 11 at Glasslands in Brooklyn. Info Below.

'Retroactive bohemian psych rock band BLACK LIGHT WHITE LIGHT release their first music video ’One Fast Move Or I’m Gone’ from the band’s debut album ‘Infrared Daylight’, released September 2011.'

The music video is filmed in southern part of Jutland in Denmark on a cold and wet October day 2011. A great difference in climate from the American desert, palms and hot sun shinning on the band when touring US for the first time at the exact same time as the video was filmed in the band’s homeland. The music video for ‘One Fast Move Or I’m Gone’ follows a busy workday for the sheep dog Jella. With a symbolic theme and epic pictures the video draws on a dualism much like the band’s music does. The music video is directed by Kristoffer Kiørboe and filmed by Martin Munch.

BLACK LIGHT WHITE LIGHT’s debut album “Infrared Daylight” was recorded in North Hollywood with producer Rick Parker (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Dandy Warhols, Von Bondies). The band has had a busy year. Beside an album release and a 9 days long US tour in October the band performed in UK in September, at the NXNE Music Festival in Toronto, Canada in June and toured around Scandinavia playing with bands like Crocodiles and Crystal Antlers.

I know the Ajello for years now...I "discovered" Fabrizio Tavernelli (aka Taver) first, almost 20 years ago... he was the leader/singer of a band called A.F.A. and that day he had on an indian headdress that rivaled Jamiroquai. Since then he has been a proponent of a myriad of projects, music, radio, fanzines, books, labels... Luca Roccatagliati aka DJ Rocca has deeply linked his name to Maffia Illicit Club in Reggio Emilia being the resident DJ. There's nothing like Rocca's enviable record collection...

Around 2003 the two figures joined forces to form AJELLO, a studio project heavily inspired by italo disco and new wave... after 8 years of working together, they are dubbed as italo nu-disco dons having released music on every cool disco label on planet earth & re-edited the most impossible hard to find records,

The new album, Smells Like Too Cheesy has a definitive 80s approach and features the vocals of some of our past and present disco heroes: from the legendary Krisma to italo-disco timeless icon Fred Ventura trough the interplanetary XXL disco diva of the XXI Century Hard Ton.

Luminodisco is the project by italian producer Federico Costantini. In his hometown Lecce our Luminodisco starts to get involved with music trough the punk rock circuit where he becomes a respected guitar player.

In 2004 Federico moves to Madrid and falls in love with electronic music jammin on synthesizers and drum machines. Today Federico lives in Rome and works as a sound engineer in a dubbing studio; nighttime, when he's not composing his own beats, Luminodisco exclusively spins his record collection at Rome’s best nu-disco party Exe-Cute.

Revolution, I Love You, like the 1968 Paris Student Uprising that inspired the band's name, is a volatile mix of impulses that come together in a joyous riot of sound. R,ILY’s is Rob Lindgren and Jason Reynolds – two men with enough ingenuity and fearless curiosity to create sophisticated and challenging music that you can't stop dancing to.

They sequestered themselves for more than two years drawing inspiration from 20th century French philosophy, a radical world-view and music of all types. Lindgren and Reynolds destabilized their own preconceived notions of rock and pop, creating music that synthesizes common genres into a collage of sound. The songs have a sense of urgency arising from electric fuzz and hypnotic guitar loops.

We Choose to Go to the Moon, the debut full-length album from Revolution, I Love You, is an experiment in pop music. Our new favorite label, Dublin’s Delphi that brought you We Cut Corners, would like to introduce Deaf Joe with a free download and a video of his new song ‘The Softest Touch’ which is the title track to his new E.P. available for free on www.deafjoe.com . The video, directed by Neil O'Driscoll, was shot on film in London and Waterford.

Joe's debut album will be out in January 2012. In the meantime he’ll be playing around Dublin with his full band for the first time at the Hard Working Class Heroes Festival this week. Joe is anything but deaf. Well.. maybe a little deaf to the noisy ebb and flow of fashion and fad, but not to the source of his soulful and dreamlike songs. His romantic leanings are further portrayed in his work for music in theatre and dance in his home town of Waterford, Ireland.

Copenhagen's Iceage kicked off their 3 night stint in NYC Saturday night at Cake Shop with an intense albeit extremely short set that saw the temperature rise at least 10 degrees in almost as many minutes. These four boys, and I mean boys as they all had big black Xs on their hands at this 21 and up show, will not be going home to tell stories of New York crowds standing around, arms folded and chin wagging. They seem to already have a small 'brigade' of followers, fists shaking, hanging on every word. It's great to see these, most probably, 'accidental virtuosos' come and rock a scene too oft populated by noodle peddling cojone-less indie troubadours. Good show boys.

We’re excited to bring you a deeply underground release from one of the biggest ‘overground’ producers out there today. White Shadow, who co-wrote and produced nine tracks on Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ is releasing a 5 song EP called ‘I’m Killing Me’. He will also kick off his first national tour on August 10 performing on the electronic music festival IDentity Tour.

In the summer of 2010, Lady Gaga discovered what many had already known -- White Shadow knows how to make people dance. After hearing a mixtape he put together, she hand-picked him to contribute to ‘Born This Way’. So, he left the DJ booth for Gaga’s production studio and spent nearly a year writing, producing, editing and touring with her while making the album.

White Shadow recorded ‘I’m Killing Me’ earlier this summer in order to give fans attending IDentity a little taste to what to expect of his live show -- which is much more aggressive and harder than the pop music he created with Lady Gaga. In addition to his own material, he will be spinning edits of songs he loves. Rest assured, you will be dancing.

“America is the birthplace of electronic dance music,” said White Shadow. “Techno and house are heartland music, straight out of Detroit and Chicago. I’m excited to be traveling all over the country, playing the music I love and was raised on.”

White Shadow (aka Paul Blair) spent his youth on a farm in Ohio and in Detroit, alternately surrounded by country music and KISS anthems. He moved to Japan when he was 17 and started DJing regularly. Coming hot off the heels of their recent mix tape for Diplo’s MadDecent DJ duo Jess & Crabbe present “Bazzerk – African Digital Dance”on Mental Groove Records, a unique compilation showcasing extensively the real sound of Kuduro over two discs and a total of twenty-seven tracks.

The genre first appeared a couple of decades ago in Angola, as European and American electronic music influences reached the African continent. Combined with traditional Angolan culture, it rapidly birthed Kuduro, a dancefloor movement based primarily on raw efficient electronic instrumentals but also encompassing melodic vocals and dance. From the mere instrumental + vocal animation formula that was Kuduro in its first decade (late 80’s to early 90’s), it has evolved into a legitimate movement and specific genre of its own. Vocalists migrating from the Angolan rap scene to Kuduro enriched and empowered the scene with quality vocals to compliment and complement the instrumental productions. An energetic dance style influenced by the daily life in Angola and traditional dances such as Ladjum or Milindro was appended as another crucial element. If you can’t make the audience follow your dancing, you’ve failed. And there you have it, Kuduro as it is today: a worldwide-spreading phenomenon based on the three key ingredients that are a blasting electronic track, stimulating vocals that can range from rapping to singing, and frenetic infectious dancing.

From Angola throughout the world, Kuduro has already found new homes in other countries such as Portugal, Cape Verde, France, and Brazil amongst others who adopted the raw style and added their own distinctive twist to it.

Precursor Geneva-based label Mental Groove has a history of unearthing the music you’ll be dancing or listening to next. Meanwhile, Jess & Crabbe have been extensively researching and promoting the Kuduro genre for the last couple of years, putting out mixtapes and putting on parties. They presented the label with a compilation project that Mental Groove couldn’t be more thrilled about, and two years of thorough research later finally comes “Bazzerk – African Digital Dance Music”, a comprehensive and genuine portrait of the singular Kuduro movement, from its original Angolan form to the various Portuguese, French, or South-American declinations it incepted.

Breakout band from this year’s SXSW, Sundress, they’ve just completed their Debut EP, out later this summer, and we have the first preview here with the song ‘Derelict’.

Sundress is an American Psychedelic-Pop band, formed in Denton, Texas in 2010 by principle members Ryan McAdams, bassist Drew McCary, guitarist Kennon Talley, keyboardist Jim Harrington and drummer Brack Cantrell. Sundress is described as having an ethereal or “Dream Pop” sound bringing in influences all across the board. The five young men harvest a brand new, much modern sound in the veins of Slowdive, Pink Floyd, Sparklehorse, Spiritualized, Radiohead and more. Just a bunch of small town kids in a small town trying to make the biggest sound possible.

“Humbling Tides” is the second album in the unique kora/guitar/vocal songwriting idiom explored by Yann Tambour, now known as Stranded Horse (formerly Thee, Stranded Horse and Encre).

Written largely during a spell living in Bristol, UK and recorded in the serene coastal environs of Normandy in North-West France, “Humbling Tides” continues along the path embarked upon with “Churning Strides” (released as Thee, Stranded Horse in 2006), effecting subtle but significant changes to a musical formula that finds Tambour melting disparate musical modes and cultures – shades of the mandinka tradition of West Africa, medieval folksong, Fahey-esque fingerpicking, French chanson and more can be discerned – into one bold, fluid and graceful new form.

Set to record, and combined with what Yann describes as his “daily musical moodswings”, this approach makes “Humbling Tides” a record of sublime contrasts, the sort one can only really cherish through surveying a landscape at length: early on we find moments of studied, concise and almost conventional songwriting such as “Shields” and “Les Axes Déréglés”, but venture deeper and things get freer, more instinctive and nomadic – see the album's two sprawling, masterfully executed epics, “Jolting Moon” and the closing “Halos”, the outro of which evidences the heights of Tambour's kora dexterity.

Then there's the vocal style, a talking point for many on “Churning Strides”. Where that record found Tambour pointedly playing with T-Rexian vocal affectations – even down to a wondrously spare cover of Bolan's “Misty Mist” – “Humbling Tides” is where he finds his natural voice, more distanced narrator than preacher (hence the loss of the somehow accusatory “Thee...”), plotting gently surrealist, at points faux-naive and childish lyrics in English and French over his velvetine compositions, augmented for the first time by cello and violin arrangements courtesy of Joseph Roumier and Carla Pallone.

Intriguingly, while the “Thee, Stranded Horse” project was conceived as a conscious break from his previous work as Encre (4 albums of more sample-based material released in the early part of the century), Yann views the first Stranded Horse album as a partial move back towards his earlier work, in spirit at least: “Humbling Tides”, then, in some ways marks the closing of the circle on what is, to date, a formidable and diverse body of work.

After the the incredible success of TWR72’s 1991 EP on Instant Replay last month they’re back with a track from their newest release, Exorcizes Vol.1 from Damien Damien. We have the the Bart BMore remix of the lead track ‘Zero’, a merciless banger which leaves no prisoners on the dance floor.

Zero is a hard and experimental track, based on an obsessive-compulsive disorder: counting every step you do, every thing you see. Somewhere along the line the brain is short-circuiting and all goes wrong. The nightmarish ambient sounds and talk about LSD at the end make this one of the most scary dance tracks ever made.

Damien Damien is the title of the demonic playground of Joost van Bellen, the legendary Dutch dj and promoter. Van Bellen was one of the dj’s who introduced early techno and acid house in 1987 in Europe and has been on the forefront of what is happening in clubbing and electronic music for ever since. His latest venture Rauw, a club night, which has been going since 2003, has introduced many artists to the electro, electro techno, innovating house and disco punk scenes.

Van Bellen’s credo “As long as it unsettles and bites it’s good” works also for this project. In cooperation with fellow artists, van Bellen is investigating the dark side of empty-headed fun and hedonism, not stopped by any limit of genre or sound.
Instant Replay has the honour of releasing Exorcizes Vol.1. The E.P. is engineered by Tom Trago and mixed by New York based Mark Verbos.

With this summer being the 50th anniversary of the worldwide explosion of 'The Twist' we've been checking out all things Joey Dee & The Starliters, house band at the famed NYC nightclub The Peppermint Lounge where it all began. The clip above is from the film 'Hey Let's Twist', a fictionalized version of both the venue and the band, and is a great peek at NYC nightlife culture in the early 60's.

On a similar note, and not in name only, is a new band from New York City that seems to capture a similar atmosphere. They are Starlight Girls and you can check them out below in their new video for 'Gossip'. Is the name a coincidence? Or was it just in the stars?

We've been fans here at Low Life of all things Dev Hynes for quite a while. 2008's country, soul, show tune extravaganza 'Falling Off The Lavender Bridge' from Lightspeed Champion was as fresh on album as it was on stage. But it seems now that Mr. Hynes prefers to keep changing persona and keep people guessing as he's now morphed into the new moniker Blood Orange. We saw this one coming about a year ago at an early Blood Orange show at Bruar Falls in Brooklyn that featured a laptop, a guitar, a few fresh songs and a handful of onlookers sipping their beers. Now it looks like there will be a full album out on the 8th of August. There's a few previews popping up online so check out the clip below.

London’s DJ Birdee a relatively new name in the world of dance music that is making serious waves very quickly. Originally hailing from sunny Italia, he calls his blend of housey beats, obscure 70s samples and wobbly b-lines, ‘Ghetto Disco.’

His latest release ‘Shake It’ has been played by a veritable who's who of dance music: Laidback Luke, Crookers, Tom Staar, Jaymo and Andy George, Boris Dlugosch, Reset!, Malente and many more have all given huge support to the track, which has also been played 3 times on BBC Radio 1. Birdee has also recently done a guest mix for the Loose Cannons - well known for spotting hot new talent - which has been aired on their established radio show on Kiss 100.

Last but not least, he has just finished a remix for legendary dance label Southern Fried Records, who have also snapped up one of his originals to be released in June. In the meantime his new single Freak, to be released on Jaimie Fanatic's LKC imprint on April 1, is already being supported by Kissy Sell Out on his Radio 1 Show. It's easy to see why there is so much buzz surrounding Birdee at the moment, and with more releases and remixes due soon, this is only the beginning!

Lars Moston & Breakfastklub come out strong with their first release on Coco Machete. There’s three hot mixes to choose from depending on how you like your ‘Organik’ beats cooked. Lars comes at you with the original cut ready to rock the blocks from Harlem to Hamburg with heavy de-tuned 808 toms, clickety clack rim shots, the vocal chant of ‘Bring The Beat Back’ and enough bass to set of car alarms on the next block. Paris’ Mikix The Cat who has been dropping recent releases on Brooklyn’s Trouble & Bass takes things in a dirtier direction with big rave sounds that just might be the car alarms set off by Lars’ original. Live in NYC - Timing is Everything

We got there just in time only having to bear the last two songs of Caveman, the group who opened for Yuck Saturday night at Bowery Ballroom. There's just something that never sits right with me around the whole 'give the guitarist and extra floor tom to beat on' thing. They were called Caveman though, but it could have been more interesting to just beat on some rocks and really put their name to the test...

After a quick intermission and sound check on came Yuck who were quite excited as this was their biggest headlining show to date and they've just come off a month tour as the openers for Tame Impala. They jumped right into things delivering a solid one hour set of album cuts and b-sides with lead singer Daniel Blumberg's eyes beaming through the mop of curly hair hanging in his face. They sounded great with their soaring drone and pop melodies even coming off a bit Country and Western Shoegaze from time to time. Their baggy denim on denim...uniforms?...worked well with their overall tone and they seemed to be having a great time with guitarist Max Bloom doing most of the talking. At the end they went off stage for a reluctant yet obligatory and probably well deserved round of encore cheers coming back for two songs finishing the set with the space rock maximalism of 'Rubber'. Good show.

Next it was off to the old St. Patrick's Cathedral on Mott Street in NoLiTa, not for any kind or repentance but to check out Matt Marble's 1 a.m. performance of 'Way Up in The Middle of the Air. Again timing was everything as we arrived to the smell of candles and the first few notes of an ensemble of organ, bassoon, trombone, accordion and two contra-bass performing their 'scored improvisational work inspired by Ezekiel’s fantastic vision in the Old Testament' all whilst wandering from space to space around the cathedral; except the organist of course. These cathedral performances seem to be catching on and what a great way to wind down a night. Timing then dictated that it was time to head home.

This week Low Life Inc. is taking you back 20 years in time to 1991 with a new track from TWR72 called ‘Summer of ‘91’, and this is the ACID Version. This is the bonus track from the 1991 EP on Instant Replay. These guys are on a roll this year, their last track for the Bad Life label, ‘Future Tool’, is getting hammered by all the big DJ’s from Diplo to Len Faki. With releases coming up on Fool’s Gold, Instant Replay, Magnetron and other labels, TWR72 are definitely the ones to watch this summer!

TWR72’s string of successful releases just keeps getting longer. After their 2010 chart topper Tunnel, the boys released a couple of very strong remixes, like the one for The Benelux – Girl Singer, B.R.U.C.E.- The Wallet, Seymour Bits- This Is The Place To Be, and of course Teki Latex’ Dinosaurs With Guns.

Many of these mixes have proven to be timeless and are still being played weekly. The lucky dj’s that have been able to get the earliest promos of the 1991 EP are playing these tracks at the peak hours of many clubnights. Especially since Alec Metric put a track in his BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix a couple of weeks ago, the demand has risen rapidly. So now it’s time to unleash this beast of an EP.

Starting off with the upbeat yet banging Summer track; reminiscent of the good old Big Fun days, this track is going to do very well at daytime parties this summer…Next up is the darker Autumn. Based on a similar chord, but this time the drive is better suited for the club or late hours of those festival days ahead. Finally we go in even deeper with the stunning Winter track; Dark and gloomy techno in the best Cocoon tradition.

With releases coming up on Fool’s Gold, Instant Replay, Magnetron and other labels, TWR72 are definitely the ones to watch this summer!

With a friendship longer than ten years, The Walk and Rogerseventytwo started to work together as dj’s in the summer of 2004. Soon gigs followed in the Netherlands, including the big festivals, Prague, Paris, Copenhagen, Bratislava, Berlin, Freiburg and London.

2007 was the year that their baby AMSTEREO was born. Their own party night in one of the most outstanding clubs at that moment in the city of Amsterdam: The Flex Bar. Teenage Bad Girl, Les Petits Pilous, Aysam, Danger, Breakbot, Djedjotronic, Hey Today!, and Scenario Rock came to join the line-up in the first, very successful editions. Their name, as dj-duo as well as individual dj’s grew rapidly in Holland and the rest of Europe. It was in 2008 when Erol Alkan himself dubbed these guys as the ones to watch in the future. And he his right.

We’re back this week with new music from Tim Easton & the Freelan Barons who have a new album ‘Beat the Band’ coming out June 21 on Campfire Propaganda. Tim Easton is always the consummate traveling folksinger. From his Ohio roots through stretches in Paris and Prague, Tim grew his credentials with stints in NYC and LA, leading to his latest encampment in the high desert country outside of Joshua Tree, California.

Easton’s craftsmanship shines fully on BEAT THE BAND – one foot standing firmly in the history of American folk music, while the other strides deftly into lush pop harmonies and song constructions. The effect propels listeners from the melancholic soul searching of a night where Nobody Plays Piano in Athens, Georgia, to the redemption and hope stirring through the protagonist of Daily Life.

"This is a unique batch of songs – not just everyday stories," says Easton. "Some of these lyrics are brand new, some of them I’ve carried with me for the better part of 10 years."

The bristle of ‘Porcupine’, Easton’s prior release (New West, 2009), is still present in BEAT THE BAND, but it has gained the polish and shine that come only with a band that has developed a strong collaborative rapport. The songs were worked over prior to entering the studio by The Freelan Barons – Mark Stepro (drums, Ben Kweller), Aaron Lee Tasjan (guitar & piano, Madison Square Gardeners) and Alex Livingstone (bass, Grand Champeen) – and further evolve the already deep catalog of a well-traveled troubadour and his band of rock & roller.
